What’s a “sandlapper” anyway? In 3rd grade we had to take South Carolina state history. Our textbook for this subject had the word Sandlapper in the title. We also watched a program called Sandlapper’s Corner on the closed circuit tv in the classroom. There is a debate about where South Carolina nickname comes from (http://www.sandlapper.org/slwhat.htm) but the term does refer to South Carolinians who are proud to be Sandlappers just as North Carolinians are proud to be Tarheels! |

Why so far from home? The Navy. I migrated from my beloved South Carolina when I joined the Navy in 1988. In the 8 years I spent in service to my country I’ve lived in Hampton, Va.; Newport News, Va.; Woodbridge, Va.; Laurel, Md.; New London, Ct. and now finally Uncasville, CT.

Home IS where the heart is! I live in southeastern Connecticut now and though it is nothing like my beloved South Carolina it is home. Connecticut has it’s own charm and having a change of seasons is kinda cool. Also it is very close to NYC if I ever get up the nerve to get on the train and visit. |
